Leon Glass and Michael Mackey use nonlinear dynamics to explain how physiological rhythms arise, how they start and stop, how they respond to single and repeated perturbations, and how they organize in space. The book also sets out the idea of dynamical diseases, illnesses caused by abnormal timing in the body's rhythms rather than by an outside agent. It assumes no advanced mathematics and adds a mathematical appendix.
It was written for biologists, physicians, physical scientists and mathematicians. Practitioners who work with EEG, heart rate or other biological rhythms will find a clear grounding in oscillation, noise and chaos.
