Key findings

  • GPS data entry increased driving errors and distraction
  • No difference between QWERTY and ABCD keyboards used one-handed

A driving-simulator study of distraction from typing into a GPS unit. Undergraduates entered destinations on either a QWERTY or an ABCD-style keyboard while driving; driving errors, eye fixations and EEG theta were recorded. Entering GPS data clearly worsened driving and distraction measures, but the keyboard layout made no difference when used one-handed.
