Key findings
- Distinct cortical and subcortical networks underlie successful and failed inhibition
- Reduced activity in an orbitofrontal network was linked to starting drug use early
- Separate networks were associated with ADHD symptoms and with stopping speed
A very large brain-imaging study of 14-year-olds from the European IMAGEN project, mapping the brain networks behind successful and failed attempts to stop an action. Impulsivity turned out not to be one thing: separate networks were tied to early drug use, to ADHD symptoms and to the speed of stopping, and one was linked to a variant in a noradrenaline transporter gene.
